Nestled in at Flora

As the leaves are beginning to fall, my work is blooming in Flora, a local Portland boutique. I am pleased to add this shop to the list of locale retailers showing my wears. Flora is a lovely gift shop filled with goods that are inspired by the natural world. Overflowing with jewels, scents and treats for the home there is a world of treasures to be discovered.

Each month Flora holds a themed First Thursdays event. Join me November 4th for a Nest themed night, highlighting Jenna Roberston’s collages made from recycled wool sweaters, Monika Reed of Favor Jewelry and some of my works as well! I will also be participating in the December 2nd First Thursday showcasing prints just in time for the holiday season.

Recycled Plastic Shrinky Dinks

Materials:

#6 plastic containers
Sandpaper
Permanent Markers or Colored Pencils
Craft Punch
Scissors
Hole Punch
Jump Rings and Earring Wires
Cookie Sheet
Aluminum Foil

Here's an updated version of one of our favorite crafts from the past.
1.Collect #6 plastic containers (clear containers typically from take-out food, or vegetable containers) Look for this symbol on the bottom.

2. Cut a shape out of the plastic, keep in mind that the plastic shrinks about 1/3 of the original size. Our 2" circle became about 3/4" when shrunk. If you prefer the uncolored plastic to appear white-ish then gently sand the plastic, if you like the plastic clear leave the plastic as is.

3.Draw on one side of the plastic with permanent marker, and colored pencil. Remember your art will shrink alot, so take this into account when making your design. We used a large 2 inch craft punch to cut out our designs for the earrings and then we cut a second inner circle using a 1 inch craft punch. You can also use scissors to cut out your designs. Be sure to add a regular hole punch before baking, so you can attach jump rings and earring wires.

4.Place the plastic on a thin cookie sheet (not the insulated type) covered with parchment paper or aluminum foil. We used a heat gun on low heat to shrink the plastic if you do not have a heat gun, you can bake the plastic at 350 degrees for 2- 3 minutes. Each oven is different so watch closely. As you melt the plastic, you will see the plastic curl up and then it will flatten back out, Remove from the heat source at this point. and if needed flatten further with a spatula or other flat surface. It does give off some fumes so we used a window and a fan for ventilation, or a respirator.

5.We added a jump ring to some of our shapes and strung them on ball and chain necklaces,or added earring wires. You can play around with stringing more than one design together with jump rings.
You can even make rings you need to experiment with different lengths, try 4.5-5 inches. After heating immediately remove and quickly wrap around a chapstick tube. ((an adult must do this part--it is hot and you must work fast!))

This summer, I decided to try something a little different, with the kids not in school things can get a little crazy around here. To help me with the work load, as well as bring me up to date with the wonders of the world wide web, I decided to take on interns. The experience has been great so far, and I hope to say the same for them. Not only are they my interns, but they are also talented artists themselves. Meet the interns:

Kate is a photographer and writer, who found her way out to Portland, Oregon from Boulder, Colorado when she moved west to attend Lewis & Clark College. Upon graduating with a degree in Sociology & Cultural Anthropology she embarked into the world of pretending to be a grown-up. Thus far that adventure has included working in mental healthcare, working in food service, falling in love with yoga, learning how to surf and making sure to shoot a multitude of photos and jot down endless notes along the way. At the beginning of this summer Kate became one of Hadley Hutton's summer interns. For Kate this experience has been exciting, diverse and full of enjoyable challenges. Her role with Hadley has involved writing pitch letters, crafting press releases, contacting retailers and product photography of Hadley's delightful creations.
In addition to working for Hadley, Kate is also working as the publicist for Merge, a local fashion+retail event taking place this fall. To learn more about Kate and to see more of her work visit her website and blog.

Joanna is an illustrator and graphic designer hailing from Marquette, Michigan, who moved to Portland just 4 short months ago. Joanna graduated from a small arts college in Grand Rapids Michigan, with a BFA in illustration. She came to Portland in hopes of starting the next chapter in her life, as well as her career as a professional artist. Still unsure of which direction she wanted to take her arts career, she answered an ad in craigslist calling for an arts marketing and management intern. Thus she met Hadley, she has spent the summer building Hadley's blog and social media presence and has enjoyed doing other design projects for her. Portland Oregon is not only my hometown but is one of the bike friendliest cities in the world. Two years ago, Portland started the Sunday Parkways program. Portland Sunday Parkways is about connecting neighborhoods and people: walkers, runners, bicyclists, seniors, adults, and children all enjoying streets filled with surprises, performers, physical activities and food – and traffic-free. The 6-8 mile routes connect Portland’s beautiful parks and offer a chance for participants to listen to music, try other activities, such as hula hooping, or just relax and enjoy the smiling faces. Origami Box: A how to

A quick and easy way to make a one of a kind gift for that special someone. Using the stamps you created in the last tutorial, make a pattern on a square piece of paper. Then fold the corners of each square to the center, so the patterned side is facing outward.

Next fold the outer edge to the center, crease and open. Do the same for the lid. At the corner of the bottom of the lid fold a diagonal crease that bisects the small square created by the previous folds.

Unfold the 2 opposite sides. Refold the remaining 2 sides of the square along the crease so they stand upright and form 2 walls of the box. Fold up the third side, tucking the diagonal corner folds inward against it; wrap the third side over the folds: lay it in place. Repeat for the fourth side. Glue the points together at the center.

A first timers guide to The National Stationery Show

I decided to take the leap this year and exhibit my brand new card line at the National Stationery Show. For a first timer preparing for a large show is daunting at times. I would like to share some of my experiences here in the hopes that I can help another novice prepare for their first show. Today I would like to discuss how my husband and I designed and built the booth walls. As you can see from my booth, I have a lot of products to display, so my first challenge was figuring out how to make it all fit into an 8x10 space. To design the space, I tacked up large sheets of newsprint to function as visual references for the walls (you can often get free end rolls of newsprint at your local newspaper printer). I used drywall tape to function as shelves (drywall tape is L shaped tape so it sticks out from the wall like a real shelf.) On the paper tape shelves I placed paper examples of my cards, prints, etc; I sometimes used tack to make the papers stay on the shelves. (Tack is a putty like substance found at your local office supply store used in place of tape, the tacky nature allows you to move paper without damage to paper or walls.) With this system, I was able to move the shelves around until all the products worked visually. I decided to place my prints on the left wall, my cards, pendants and a large sign along the back wall, and my frames and pillows on the right side wall. Then I took the measurements from the paper design to build the real booth space.

I decided to use light weight door-skin wood for my walls. My thinking was that I would like to have walls I could use again. In hind sight due to the extra shipping expense, I would opt for foam walls instead. (Not the foam walls you buy from the trade show because it is very expensive, but foam walls you buy and construct yourself, which is not difficult to do. How you place foam walls is similar to how I constructed the wood walls. I will describe this in more detail when we get into construction. Here are a couple foam manufacturers, http://www.foamboardsource.com/ and http://www.diversifiedfoaminc.com/. Make sure to get flame retardant foam due to the trade show fire codes.

If you live close to the trade show and can transport the walls yourself than wood is a great option; it is durable and can be used year after year. I constructed seven wood panels for the 8x10 walls. From the photo you can see I hinged the panels so they could fold for easy transport. I reinforced the sides of the panels with a framework so the thin panels would not warp. Next the walls were primed and painted a gorgeous lemon, lime. Then we built a jig for drilling holes through the framework where the shelves would attach. The jig allows you to drill multiple panels and have the holes align across the panels. We also built a jig aligning the bolt holes on the shelves. We attached hanger bolts to the pre-painted shelves. The hanger bolts slid into the pre-drilled hole in the wood walls. A wing-nut screwed in place from the back of the wood panel to firmly attach the shelf to the wall. The shelves easily came off for shipping by unscrewing the wing-nut and pulling the bolt out.

I designed the middle of the back wall panel to be a sign. I created the sign in photoshop by patterning an original painting for the background, and adding my business logo for the centerpiece. I then sent the jpeg file to spoonflower.com to made into fabric. I stretched the fabric across the upper and lower parts of the middle panel and hinged the panels like all the other walls.

We drilled holes through the upper and lower sections of all the walls, where the panels would be zip-tied to the metal framework of the booth. We packed up the folded walls to ship by wrapping the corners in foam and sheets. To construct the booth at the show, we unpacked a panel, laid the hinged panel on one side and attached the shelves with the hanger bolts. Next we opened the panels to their full 8 feet, and zip tied the panels to the framework; then we repeated this with all the panels until the booth was constructed.

If you decide to go with foam walls, drill holes into the foam panels just like the wood, and attach the shelves with wing-nuts. Also like the wood walls you attach the panels to the frame-work by drilling holes, in the top and bottom of the foam panels, and then zip-tie the foam panels to this framework. I recommend requesting a middle-bar for your framework (typically you only get an upper and lower cross bar), if you have smaller panels this allows you to zip-tie in the middle of the panel as well.

Last we placed the art up on the shelves, and then labeled each item. The labels were created with an Avery label in Word, using a word template. I choose a clear address label so it would blend into the shelf. Voila! the art and labels are up, Yeah! Stay tuned next week to learn how I created the flooring, and lighting for the booth.

Easy Stamps : A How To

One rainy day my daughter and I made stamps. We will walk you through the steps you need to create one for yourself. You will need some foam. You can use foam from meat or vegetable packing, or you can find foam in your local craft store.

Materials:
foam
pen
scissors
ink
paper

Draw the stamp shape on the foam.

Cut around the shape you have drawn.

Embellish the shape with drawn details, these details will not take ink.

You can mount your stamp if desired. I usually prefer to keep mine unmounted as the flat stamps are easier for me to store, though my fingers get messier during the inking process. To mount it, dab a bit of hot glue on the back of the foam stamp and place on the large foam block. Next I gently pull way the edges of the foam block so only the foam stamp will print, not the mounting block.

Now your stamp is ready. Ink the stamp by carefully pressing the foam into the ink pad.

Once the foam stamp is evenly coated with ink, turn it onto the receiving paper and firmly rub the back of the stamp into the paper (If your fingers have lots of ink on them like mine typically do, place a scrap piece of paper over the stamp back so when you press down the ink on you hands transfers to the scrap paper instead of the clean paper you are printing on.)

Voila!! you made a stamp.

You can do a large stamp like the peacock shown here. In this case I used a square piece of foam, I did not cut the peacock shape out. I often like to add some drawn details into the completed stamp, like more dots for the peacock, or stems for the flowers.

Make a pattern with your stamp, or just make a singular beautiful stamp!

National Stationery Show

To kick off my new card line I displayed my wares at the National Stationery Show in New York this year. You can see my booth here. Over the next few weeks I'll be taking you inside the show, so you can learn the ins and outs of how it all came together.

Commissions

My latest commission was done as a wedding gift. This piece was created to match the colors and themes of the wedding. I love to do commissioned paintings. I have done special pieces for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, bridal bouquets, portraits, landscapes, and more. I can recreate a painting in the same vein as one of my existing originals, or I can work with you if you have an idea. For example you may request hummingbirds, mums, and the color red. My standard sizes are 8 x 10, 12 x 12, &11 x 14 - I am happy to create something larger or smaller (I have done paintings as large as 20 panel 4ft x 5ft painting or as small as a 5i x 5in.)
